City Dweller

1
Unconsciously, I envied the city: I liked to walk unpurposely, I liked to look at what people do, and I liked to connect what I experienced with my inner feeling. City, especially Seoul, was the field of my personal reason to live in. Rural areas gave me not so much the comfortable, but the uncanny and scary image. Traditional scenes and places are also part of our life, history, and culture. But, at least to me, the city is utmost fascinating place in which I feel and learn everything.

2
I like the so-called fusion jaza music, such as Lee Litnour, Herbie Hancock, Miles Davis, Kim Hyun-chul, Lee So-ra, etc. At first time, I was just engaged with music as the genre of art, not the same as the present reason - the social reflection of the art. Not trying to reveal the delicacy of fusion jazz, I was absorbed with those kind of music. The lonely sound, pretty elegant sound engineering, and the repetitive phasing of the theme attracted me, and I always heard during walking the street. At many times, fusion jazz is criticized because of its lacking aspects as the traditional jazz. It is usually thought that jazz has the three major elements - improvisation, swing, and voicing(?). Of course Jazz has those elements, but one prominent thing is that fusion jazz has become much commercialized and dettached with the traditional authority which expresses the jazzy sound. I don't know how to explain the difference between the non-fusion and fusion jazz at this time. But it is explicit that there is a strong tendency to criticize the fusion jazz because of the lack of the authentic jazz element or mood by especially professional perspective.

3
But, whatever the value the fusion jazz has, I like the fusion jazz because it is the part of my life or the dominant emotional source that determines me. Everything has been commercialized; who can dare to object this big ideological transformation? Jazz, as the genre of the art, is no longer the african-american music itself; also jazz is not the autonomous art like the classical music. Jazz is the artistic reflection of our life and praxis. Jazz is not just a avant-garde music which has the complicated sound composition and effect, but smoothed but serious reflection of our urban everyday-life. We always hear jazz without being concentrated - in advertisements, in TV show programs, in radio in-between times, and cafes. Jazz is already the daily mentality of our living.

Thinking the contemporary city is not just thinking famous architecture. Even, it is not the urban form or policy, nor is it a commercialization itself. Contemporary city is the stage we begin to think ourselves; we laugh, cry, feel sorrow, and feel boredom. City is not understandable as the bird-eye perspective, nor the physical analysis. The every element of a city is what decides us. It always has the interconnection with what we're doing. City is the philosophical place for us, and always gives the abundant motives. Is there any person who is not a city-dweller?

That's the reason why I study architecture by far ^^;
Whether one likes to rural or urban really depends on the personal taste. Anyway, I like the urban places than rural ones: It gives more comfortable and diverse motives.

I think Cincinnati is actually a city, but in an American sense, not by the sense of the metropolitan city. This kind of city makes me mad..... T_T I like the east-asian cities much more than these sub-urban cities.

But what are the east-asain cities?

Seems like you're back in Seoul. Boston's weather is extreme these days; sunny one day and raining cats and dogs on the next. How's it like there? Well.. Enjoy when you can and see you soon. I might have to change my plans but I'm pretty sure I'll stay in Korea until at least mid September. Didn't study that much for the GRE but surprisingly once started, I realized that I'm not that nervous at all. I have two tests; at mid July, and early August just before I go to Korea. !o! Hope this is good luck. Have your fingers crossed!
